Travel Etiquette & Local Customs
A few simple manners that help you get a warmer welcome everywhere you go.
Greetings & respect
A smile and a polite greeting go a long way. Vietnamese people are generally warm with visitors; showing respect to elders and keeping a calm, friendly tone is appreciated in daily interactions.
Dress at religious sites
When visiting pagodas, temples, churches and mosques, cover your shoulders and knees and avoid loud behaviour. Remove your shoes when asked, at doorways and before shrines.
Photography
Ask permission before photographing people, especially in rural communities, markets and during ceremonies. Some sites and villages prohibit photos — follow signs and local guidance.
Everyday manners
Remove your shoes when entering someone's home, and accept drinks or gifts with both hands as a polite gesture. Keep disagreements calm and private — public arguments are considered impolite.
