DECODING THE MYSTERY OF THE HUA FAMILY MANSION: SAIGON’S MOST HAUNTING URBAN LEGEND

If you are someone who lives in Saigon or enjoys mysterious and thrilling stories, you have probably heard of “The Ghost of the Hua Family Mansion.” This is not merely a tale whispered by Cholon residents late at night, but also one of the most mysterious and famous urban legends in Vietnam, having endured for more than a century. So, what lies behind the mansion with its 99 doors, filled with the marks of time? Is it a piece of historical truth, or an unexplained curse?

1. THE 99-DOOR MANSION AND ONE OF CHOLON’S WEALTHIEST FAMILIES

In the early 20th century, Hứa Bon Hòa, commonly known as Uncle Hỏa, was one of the most prominent wealthy men in Cochinchina. He owned thousands of valuable properties, the most famous of which was a luxurious mansion located on Đức Tân Street (now the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, District 1).

The mansion was designed in a classic French architectural style combined with elements of Eastern feng shui, most notably featuring exactly 99 doors. However, its grandeur was accompanied by an indescribable atmosphere of gloom and unease.

2. THE LEGEND OF THE HUA FAMILY DAUGHTER AND THE MIDNIGHT CRYING

The rumors began when the only daughter of Uncle Hỏa suddenly disappeared from public view at the height of her youth. Saigon residents at the time were abuzz with rumors that she had contracted leprosy, a deadly disease that was regarded as being associated with evil or supernatural forces at the time.

To protect his daughter, Uncle Hỏa allegedly isolated her in a locked room on the highest floor of the mansion. From then on, local residents began spreading stories about:

A mournful cry: Echoing from the sealed room in the attic on nights when the moon was waning.

A white figure at the window: The silhouette of a young woman with long, loose hair, standing by the window and looking out over the streets.

The mysterious coffin: A secret funeral ceremony carried out without any public death announcement when she passed away.

Even as time has passed, questions surrounding her true identity, the cause of her death, and the strange phenomena associated with the mansion have remained an enduring mystery for those interested in the supernatural.

3. FROM URBAN LEGEND TO A REAL-LIFE MYSTERY EXPERIENCE

Many people choose to discover this story through books or on their phone screens. But have you ever wondered:

When 5 Lazy Gen Zs Meet and Accidentally Become Travel Startup "Founders"

The truth behind a self-proclaimed thousand-dollar travel startup: Meetings mostly at milk tea shops and hilarious dramas over who gets to be the boss.

People start businesses out of passion, but our group of 5 sophomores did it out of fear... of failing our Marketing class. At first, we promised to unite for a bright future of taking tourists around the world. But the reality was brutal: out of a 2-hour meeting, an hour and a half was spent deciding whether to drink brown sugar milk tea or soursop tea. One wanted to be the CEO just because of a powerful voice, while another demanded to be the CFO simply because they owned the fanciest Casio calculator. Yet, by some miracle, our first tour ran smoothly. Customers didn't ask for a refund; they even praised us, saying, "This tour guide team stands up comedied from dawn to dusk." As the saying goes, unity is strength, and when 5 Gen Zs unite... they are unstoppable (and unpredictable)!

From Lecture Halls to Open Roads: The Startup Journey of 5 Sophomore Students

Turning classroom marketing theories into immersive ghost-hunting tours in Saigon. With zero capital, our 5-member student team relies on pure grit and action plans to bring spine-chilling city mysteries to local youth and international travelers

Many believe sophomores only struggle with general courses and exam stress. For our 5-member team in Saigon, however, it was the exact moment a horror-mystery travel project sparked. With no capital or business experience, our only leverage was student IDs and the sheer audacity to challenge the traditional travel market.

This project was born from late-night coffee sessions, where dry marketing theories were forcefully turned into real-world applications. Instead of running standard sightseeing trips, we chose a darker, more thrilling path: designing immersive, puzzle-solving ghost tours that uncover Saigon's hidden urban legends for both local youth and global travelers. A tourism startup doesn't always require massive ventures; sometimes, it simply begins with turning a casual coffee chat into a bold, disruptive action plan.
